Minister of Music
Knightdale United Methodist Church
Part-time: 10-20 hrs/week
 
Purpose
The purpose of this position is to provide leadership in the music and worship arts ministries of Knightdale United Methodist Church. This individual will plan, organize and direct the ongoing music and worship arts ministries of the church. He/she will be able to develop additional musical and artistic opportunities and integrate ongoing programs within the life and activities of the church. Qualifications Experience in musical leadership in worship settings is preferred. This individual needs to demonstrate proficiency in both organ and piano, choral conducting, music theory, program management, and voicing.
 
Job Characteristics
This is a part-time leadership position with the expectation that the individual will work according to specified duties and as the job requires. No office hours are required, however attendance at worship services and other special services that include music are expected, as well as attendance at staff meetings. The individual holding this position will conduct workshops, and rehearsals to ensure musical and other performing arts are of quality and support the mission and vision of the church. This position works closely with the Senior Pastor to align musical selections with the themes and messages being delivered. The individual holding this position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing music programs involving a mixture of volunteers and paid staff, as well as guiding and overseeing programs led by volunteers or staff.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
● Communicate regularly with Pastor regarding worship themes and upcoming events, paying special attention to the liturgical calendar and special services (including funerals and weddings) where special music can be used to complement and enhance the service.
● Select hymns for worship services in conjunction with those leading worship, both contemporary and traditional, and guide the congregation in their singing during worship.
● Direct and rehearse adult and children’s choirs, handbells, and other groups which may be formed to enhance worship and meet the needs of the congregation.
● Secure substitute musicians when necessary.
● Coordinate with Children’s Ministry to provide music program for Vacation Bible School or similar children’s camps .
● Manage the music budget within the guidelines set and amounts prescribed.
● Create and maintain an organized music filing system that is accessible and neatly ordered.
● Recruit members of the congregation for musical involvement, as gifts and expertise are identified, for both vocal and instrumental ministries.
● Support KUMC’s Vision to Splinter the Darkness with the Light of Jesus Christ, and contribute toward the church’s mission.
 
Compensation
Compensation is set by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Vacation days are determined by the seniority guidelines set in General Personnel Policies. See General Personnel Policies for additional information.
 
Evaluation
Periodic reviews with pastor and annual review with Staff-Parish Relations Committee.
